# Bar charts

> Vertical bars for totals over time or across a few categories

Bar charts show vertical bars for each time period (per day, week, or month) or for each category. They're the default when you ask for a "bar chart" without saying which way the bars should go. For many categories, use [horizontal bar charts](https://basedash.com/docs/features/chart-types/horizontal-bar-charts.md) instead.

* Periodic totals (orders per day, tickets per week)
* Comparing a handful of categories side by side
* Stacked or grouped bars with a [breakdown](https://basedash.com/docs/features/chart-types/breakdowns.md)
